Target Back to School Spree a Success!

Today, 100 local children from families in need were treated to a shopping spree compliments of Target.  The kids have been recently assisted through The Salvation Army’s National Capital Area Command’s Social Services Division.  The girls and boys were given the opportunity to visit one of four area Target stores to purchase backpacks, calculators, pens and pencils and other must-have supplies just in time to go back-to-school.  In all, The Salvation Army and Target helped a total of 12,000 K-12 students across the country 39 Salvation Army Divisions.  Both organizations wanted to help the kids to gear up for the upcoming academic year and get ready to succeed in school with the Target School Spree. Each child, selected by The Salvation Army, was awarded an $80 Target GiftCard to purchase much-needed back-to-school supplies. Each child was given a reusable Target shopping bag filled with snacks, treats and juice.  While shopping, every child was paired with a Salvation Army volunteer chaperone for their fun day of back-to-school shopping.

The Salvation Army helps thousands of children year-round and is grateful for the opportunity to once more work with Target to meet the need where the need is greatest in these children’s lives. Education is at the heart of Target’s giving and the Target School Spree is one of many ways Target acts locally to help kids learn and schools teach, paving a path to graduation. As part the promotion, the company nationally awarded 39 of The Salvation Army divisions a total of $960,000 worth of Target GiftCards. The children from the National Capital Area Command live in Washington, DC and Alexandria, and Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Each $80 Target GiftCard awarded as part of the program will provide a child with the necessary supplies to go back to school in the fall, ready to learn.
