WASHINGTON, DC, September 16, 2010

This week, Salvation Army National Capital Area Commander Major Steve Morris announced the 13th anniversary of Harbor Light Center, the alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility located on New York Avenue in Northeast Washington, DC.

Completed in 1997, Harbor Light Center offers men and women residential, outpatient and transitional programs to treat alcohol and drug addiction. The 136-bed unit provides individual and group counseling, educational and vocational assistance, and independent life skill development to help clients cope with grief or loss, work on anger issues and money management. Typical treatment plans range from 60 days to 24 months, and the 180 day program has a near 60 percent completion rate. When the optional religious component is included, the completion rate jumps to 90 percent for those on the 180 day program.

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center has served more than 5,000 clients since opening its doors 13 years ago. The 67,000 sq. ft. campus style facility is CARF Accredited. Clients may attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings as well as take G.E.D. classes.

Major Steve Morris said, “Harbor Light Center’s mission holds that no one person is beyond hope, and that each of us has infinite value. The Salvation Army offers the men and women who come through its doors an opportunity to restore their relationship with God, their families and, ultimately, with themselves.”

On September 16, The Salvation Army marked the 13th anniversary with an evening celebration and graduation.  Attending the ceremony were HLC graduates (clients) and their families.  The clients put on a talent show for their guests.  Major Robert Webb of The Salvation Army National Capital and Virginia Division (pictured left) gave brief remarks during the ceremony.  Harbor Light Center received a plaque saluting its service and commitment in ANC 5B.

This is not the first time Harbor Light Center has been recognized for its contributions.

Last spring, National Salvation Army Headquarters requested the facility take part in its national public relations campaign.  A  Dallas-based film crew spent several days interviewing clients and staff for the project.  Harbor Light’s in-house client choir sang “This Little Light of Mine” while the tape was rolling.  The choir group made the final cut and you can see them singing in this national Salvation Army commercial posted on the Area Command’s YouTube Channel.
