125th Anniversary of The Salvation Army in Alexandria

October 24, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

The Salvation Army in Alexandria will celebrate its 125th Anniversary on October 24 from 4-6 pm in Market Square located at 301 King Street in Old Town Alexandria.  A number of speakers and activities are taking place in observance of the first Salvation Army meeting in the city including a dramatic reenactment of the historic first meeting.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Eullie is scheduled to address the gathering around 5:30 p.m. when he will read a proclamation from the City.  National Capital Area Commander Major Steve Morris will speak to the crowd and The Salvation Army Alexandria Citadel Brass Band is providing music throughout the event.

The FedEx Mobile Feeding Unit will be on hand to provide free snacks and water.

The Salvation Army is rolling out the Big Red Kettle into Market Square to highlight the upcoming 2010 Red Kettle Campaign.  The official kick-off for the National Capital Area is November 12 and the campaign runs six weeks.  The Red Kettle Christmas Campaign accounts for 25% of the overall operating budget for The Salvation Army in Alexandria.

Corps Officer Captain Ken Argot said, “The Red Kettle Christmas Campaign is a critical time for The Salvation Army.  Last year’s big snow storm on the weekend before Christmas negatively impacted our ability to raise money through our Red Kettles.  We are praying the weather is more cooperative this year.  Plus, the money raised here stays here and it used for local programs.”

A Salvation Army Angel Tree will be displayed in Market Square for those wishing to adopt a needy child this Christmas.  The program provides low- or no- income families with emergency holiday assistance.  Last year, The Salvation Army in Alexandria helped 1,400 children, and across the entire National Capital Area Command, nearly 14,000 children were provided a good Christmas.

Any individual or groups wanting to volunteer this Christmas season for The Salvation Army in Alexandria should call 703-836-2427.
