Great Things for the Month of May

Your Salvation Army is planning some great things coming up in May for the National Capital Area.  If you’re not receiving our tweets (www.twitter.com/salarmydc) or our posts (www.facebook.com/salarmydc), you may very well miss out.

The Salvation Army Alexandria Citadel Corps Civic Dinner – Saturday, May 7 at 5:30 pm

 This year, the local observances of National Salvation Army Week is kicking off with the Alexandria Annual Civic Dinner at the Carlyle Club.  The venue is located at 411 John Carlyle Street in Alexandria, just minutes from Old Town.  The theme is “March On! Achieving Greatness Together.” The evening’s special guest is Vince Lombardi, Jr., son of the late football legend Vince Lombardi.  Come hear him speak about what made his dad so great.  Tickets are $100 per person. The Salvation Army of Washington Mother’s Day Luncheon and Pampering – Sunday, May 8 at 11:30 am

The Salvation Army of Washington is planning to Celebrate the Beauty of Mom with a truly special Mother’s Day treat for area women in need.  About 100 women from several programs will take part in the 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon that is being held at Harbor Light Center on New York Avenue, NE. This year’s event has been specially tailored for moms from The Salvation Army’s Turning Point and Harbor Light programs, and those similar offered by other area groups. Moms are receiving a delicious meal and some much deserved pampering.

Following a short program, volunteers will serve lunch in the Harbor Light Center’s cafeteria.  The women will dine on Barbequed Boneless Chicken Breast, Honey Baked Ham, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Petite Whole Green Beans, a garden salad, rolls and beverages; and the moms will have a choice of three cakes for dessert-Chocolate, Carrot or Lemon Pound cake.

In addition, each mom will receive their choice of a manicure or chair massage beginning at 1:00 pm. 

The mothers are invited to bring their children 12 and under.  The kids will have the opportunity to work on special crafts for their mom while the pampering is happening.

Note: All  slots for the Mother’s Day Luncheon and Pampering are gone. However, there is still a need for volunteer manicurists and licensed massage therapists.  Please call Pamela Handon at 202-756-3918.

National Salvation Army Week from May 9-15

Established during the Eisenhower administration, National Salvation Army Week is a time set aside to educate the community about the work of your local Salvation Army Corps and facilities.  The National Capital Area Command is planning to thank members some very special people including veterans, major stakeholders and an army of volunteers.

Donor Appreciation Reception – Tuesday, May 10, 6:00 pm in Arlington, VA. This event serves to educate donors not only about recent activities, but the William Booth Society, a Salvation Army major donor program.  The National Capital Area Command 2010 Annual Report will also be released to the public at this event.

Military Appreciation Visit – Thursday, May 12, 11:00 am at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (formerly Old Soldier’s Home) in NW Washington. Disabled and senior veteran residents of the home will have the opportunity to visit and chat with Salvation Army Officers, listen to musical entertainment being provided by the National Capital Brass Quartet and enjoy delicious donuts and piping hot coffee compliments of Dunkin’ Donuts of Washington.

Volunteer Appreciation Barbeque – Saturday, May 14, 11:00 am at Kennedy Recreation Center and Park in NW Washington. The Salvation Army is inviting volunteers from across the National Capital Area to come out to the park to fellowship and participate in a friendly, but competitive, game of kickball.  Staff will serve grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings to attendees.  Georgetown Cupcakes is donating tasty, delectable cupcakes for dessert.  All attending volunteers will receive a t-shirt.  The outing promises loads of fun for everyone.

The Salvation Army Alexandria Citadel Corps Women’s BBQ Dinner – May 21 at 5:30 pm

The Corps is located at 1804 Mt. Vernon Avenue Alexandria VA, in the heart of Del Ray. Tickets per adult are only $10.00 for Over the Hill Farm’s Freshly barbecued Pulled Pork, Baked Beans, Macaroni Salad, Corn Bread, Beverage and Dessert. Children eat for $5.00 each and their meal consists of a hot dog, chips and a beverage. Anyone showing a Military ID at the door will receive a 10% Discount in honor of Armed Forces Day. Food is by Myron Spaulding’s Over the Hill Farm, ranked 5th in the nation for bbq’n whole pigs.
