The final 2011 Christmas Campaign Report; plus, local philanthropist offers match as challenge to the community

The Salvation Army National Capital Area raised $1.4 million during the recently completed 2011 Red Kettle Campaign. Compared with the year before, this reflects an increase of 15% in kettle funds received.  The anticipated boost was budgeted and is needed by The Salvation Army in order to continue Doing the Most Good due to an increase in the number of families served.  In 2011, The Salvation Army National Capital Area command served 73,000 individuals, approximately 11,000 more than the previous year.  Across the US, The Salvation Army raised $147.6 million during the time, a new fundraising record and an increase of 3.4 percent from 2010.

The Salvation Army National Capital Area is still behind by 3% in mail donations over last year.  To help with this decline, the CEO of ML Resources, Muslim Lakhani, made an offer to The Salvation Army to match donations, up to $150,000, as part of community challenge and funding renewal for Grate Patrol, the Army’s 26 year old year-round homeless nutritional ministry in Washington.  This is the fourth consecutive year Mr. Lakhani has funded the program.

“The community’s generosity during the Army’s 2011 Red Kettle Campaign was greatly appreciated,” said Area Commander, Major Steve Morris. “Our hope is that those who are able to will give during this time to double the impact of their gift allowing The Salvation Army to provide assistance to families through the winter months.”

We encourage everyone wishing to have their donation matched to give as soon as they are able.  Please remember to write MATCH all personal and business checks, and in the designated space for online donations.

Gratitude for Community Partners

The Salvation Army National Capital Area is grateful for its corporate partnerships including Giant Food, Safeway, Walmart, and many other retailers; all of whom played a major role in the success of the Red Kettle Campaign.
